Through video call conferencing tools, the Free and Open Source Software team “FOSS” in Ministry of Technology & Communications in partnership with Wipro, held on Wednesday 8th April the first version of the SME Connect Live Webinar for one hour with 14 participants .

The main objective was to introduce the services and scope of FOSS Center of Excellence “CoE” and how local SMEs can engage with these activities and projects. It also aims to link them with the CoE to build and accelerate SMEs in FOSS technologies and to create an ecosystem to support the demand in FOSS technologies creating unique business model.

Through the discussion, the FOSS CoE teams sought to understand the local SMEs’ current FOSS capabilities and company size, including development, professional expertise and developers’ engagement in FOSS communities. In addition, the SMEs were required to identify their legal and administrative status in terms of having commercial registration and required legalities to operate.

It is worth noting that MTC has signed last December, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Wipro Limited, a leading global information technology, consulting and business process services Company to launch a Center of Excellence (CoE) for open source.

According to this MoU, MTC and Wipro Limited will collaborate to build, deploy and sustain the CoE as well as accelerate adoption of open source technologies in the public and private sectors of Oman and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.
